Summary
INTRODUCTION
In order to effectively function in the world, it is critical that we be able to prepare for future events. The “future” event can be anything from events that will happen in a few seconds to events that will happen in days, weeks, or months. A very general term that has been applied to such abilities or activities is “future-oriented processes” (Haith, Benson, Roberts, & Pennington, 1994). Often we are aware that an event is going to take place in the future due to a warning event. Information inherent in the warning event itself or information from our past experience with that warning event can inform us about both the nature and the timing of the upcoming event. For example, when the traffic light turns yellow, from past experience we know it soon will turn red and approximately how long this will take. In cases when we have knowledge about or experience with the future event we can not only tailor our anticipation or preparation regarding the nature of the upcoming event, but we can also time them so to be optimally ready when the event occurs, and not too early or too late to be effective.
Among the most pervasive and effective paradigms used in the investigations of these future-oriented processes is the simple paired-stimulus or S1-S2 paradigm. In the typical use of this paradigm an initial stimulus or event with minimal inherent significance is followed after a fixed duration by a more significant stimulus or event.

Summary
INTRODUCTION
A sudden noise occurs while you are concentrating and you respond quickly and automatically – your body muscles flex, your eyes blink, and your facial expression registers a grimace of surprise. You have just experienced a startle reflex. The startle reflex (or startle response) is commonly measured in research studies by a blink response in humans, elicited by some startling stimulus such as a loud noise. The blink response is an early and reliable component of startle in humans. It occurs to stimuli in various sensory modalities (e.g., auditory, visual, cutaneous) and often begins within 30 ms after the onset of a sudden and intense stimulus.
The word “reflex” often seems to bring to mind a stable, simple, and unchanging response elicited under specific circumstances. But in the case of the startle reflex, this view is overly simplistic. Though this reflex can be reliably elicited, it turns out to also be highly modifiable by an extensive variety of stimuli, circumstances, and clinical conditions. The wide range of studies examining this process of modification is generally referred to as startle modification research. Fundamentally, the paradigms employed in this research involve situations in which the startle reflex is modulated or modified in amplitude, latency, or probability by another non-startling variable of interest. The remarkably wide range of factors that can modify startle is what has generated such a broad interest in its study.

Many studies have shown a consistent pattern in adults' responses to affective pictures and there is growing evidence of gender differences, as well. Little is known, though, about children's verbal, behavioral, and physiological responses to affective pictures. Two experiments investigated children's responses to pictures. In Experiment 1, children, adolescents, and adults viewed pictures varying in affective content and rated them for pleasure, arousal, and dominance. Results indicated that children and adolescents rated the pictures similarly to adults. In Experiment 2, physiological responses, self-report, and viewing time were measured while children viewed affective pictures. As with adults, children's responses reflected the affective content of the pictures. Gender differences in affective evaluations, corrugator activity, skin conductance, startle modulation, and viewing time indicated that girls were generally more reactive to unpleasant materials.

Summary
ABSTRACT
This chapter reviews methods for eliciting, measuring, and quantifying the blink component of the startle response in humans. We begin with a brief summary of what is known about the physiological circuitry of the human startle blink. We discuss laboratory techniques for eliciting the startle blink with probe stimuli in auditory, cutaneous, or visual modalities. In a discussion of recording the human blink reflex, we focus on electromyographic (EMG) recording but consider other methods. We then address approaches for quantification of blink latency and amplitude, and also raise methodological questions that warrant further experimental investigation. This overview provides an introduction for researchers who are interested in learning how to measure startle. Issues relevant to startle modification techniques are also discussed.
Overview of Methodological Issues
In this chapter, we discuss methodological issues relevant to eliciting, recording, and quantifying the blink component of startle. This review is intended for new investigators because it provides a guide to methodological issues, as well as for experienced investigators, in the hope that this attempt to synthesize methodological concerns will stimulate discussion. Some aspects of startle methodology have been presented at meetings (Cook & Berg, 1995), in methodological abstracts (Balaban, Losito, Simons, & Graham, 1986a), and papers (Clarkson & Berg, 1984; Blumenthal, 1994).
There are three general topics to be addressed: How is the startle blink elicited, recorded, and quantified? We discuss startle elicited in auditory, cutaneous, and visual modalities. In the section on recording, we focus on electromyography (EMG) but briefly consider other methods. Aspects of signal processing are also addressed in this section.
